Waukegan High School’s varsity and sophomore baseball teams are once against teaming up with Zion-Benton Township High School to raise money for pediatric cancer research. WHS and ZBTHS will participate in the third annual “Battle at Bowen” on Friday, April 25. The event will feature raffles and t-shirt sales, with all proceeds going to benefit research at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
The Battle at Bowen game was started in 2012 as way to generate more interest in the game between the two geographic rivals, and to honor WHS head coach Mr. Dan Green, whose young son was diagnosed with a brain tumor nearly four years ago. Money is being raised through t-shirt sales at both WHS campuses. Game admission proceeds and shirt/concession sales on game day will also be donated.
“The support from both teams and communities has really been overwhelming. We’ve had a tremendous turnout the last two years, and this has become an event our team looks forward to all year,” said Mr. Green.
The Battle at Bowen begins with the sophomore game at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 25 at Bowen Park, in Waukegan. The varsity game will follow at 7 p.m. For information, contact Coach Green at dgreen@wps60.org.
